The ritual of marriage has deep roots dating back for centuries. People find someone that they want to commit their whole life to and use this ritual to vow to love them for the rest of their lives. In the supreme court ruling on gay marriage one of the justices said this about marriage: “it fulfils yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.” Another argument that was made in favor of gay marriage was that if it is legal in one state if that couple moves to a different state then their union will not be recognized by society. That doesn’t unite us as states that segregates us.
The next argument from the supreme court justices is that this move to allow same sex marriage was unconstitutional. The vote was given to the people in each state and most states voted against it. One justice said “this Court is not a legislature. Whether same-sex marriage is a good idea should be of no concern to us. Under the Constitution, judges have power to say what the law is, not what it should be. The people who ratified the Constitution authorized courts to exercise “neither force nor will but merely judgment.”
The long standing definition of marriage was not originally made to exclude certain groups of people. It was based off of the drive of two people who came together and made a child together. “This universal definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman is no historical coincidence. Marriage did not come about as a result of a political movement, discovery, disease, war, religious doctrine, or any other moving force of world history—and certainly not as a result of a prehistoric decision to exclude gays and lesbians. It arose in the nature of things to meet a vital need: ensuring that children are conceived by a mother and father committed to raising them in the stable conditions of a lifelong relationship.”
Marriage is ordained of God. The only way to bring children into the world is with a man and a woman. Those children are entitled to a loving stable home to help them get through life. If society were to reset and we didn’t have the technology that we have now then the only way to bring a child into the world would be with a man and a woman having an intimate relation. This is the way that God intended it to be. This is how our earthly life has continued on for so long. This is the plan of salvation. Satan has mixed up the minds of men so that they think that wickness is happiness. But I also believe that some people are born attracted to their same gender and some are not. I do not feel that they are doing this out of rebellion of some sort of religious standard. I believe that this is their drive and their path in life. I believe that people should get a chance to find happiness in life and I am grateful that I live in a country where we have the freedom that makes that possible for people. This is a very tough and sensitive subject and needs to be handled with great care. I feel very blessed to live in a country where I have freedom of religion that I may worship how I want. Just because I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and my church believes that marriage should be between one man and one woman does not give me or any of it's other members a right to judge those who are following a different path. Christ's ministry was all about love. As so should our's be.
